Joan Avoids a Cold

The vintage film I watched was called Joan Avoids a Cold, and was published in 1947. The film was in the top 10 most downloaded films, so I thought it would be interesting. The purpose of the film was to teach younger children how to stay healthy when it starts getting colder out. It taught children different techniques for avoiding colds, like using tissues, not sharing food, covering your sneezes, washing your hands, and even how to properly blow your nose. The film was very outdated and talked about how parents should go in to the school nurse to plan a health chart and go over the weather and learn how to properly dress your child. This seems unnecessary in today's world since it's common sense that you should wear a jacket when it's 40 degrees out. A lot can be learned from this film though and if you showed it to present day first and second graders, they would take away the major points from it. It stressed all the things we teach younger children about washing your hands and covering your mouth, just using old fashioned language like wash-basin and saying that children need to wear snowsuits if it's below 40 degrees. We can learn that our society has grown a lot health-wise and keeping younger children healthy during the colder months is something everyone is knowledgeable of.

This short video is pretty interesting in the context of the sicknesses children come in contact with today, especially considering things like swine flu and avian flu. If kids in my high school had learned these tips, maybe we wouldn't have had such a bad time with swine flu going around! I think lots of families could use to see a video like this as there is not a whole lot of serious health learning in early school days.
